An oil cooler is a small radiator that uses air to cool oil in the same way that your radiator does to cool water.
 
Generally, it's a good idea to fit one of these if you rev your engine higher than it is normally designed to run, fit a high lift cam, if you are towing or racing as these types of activity can overheat your oil so that it will no longer protect and cool your engine properly.
 
This type of cooler is relatively easy to install - by design it is a series of sandwich plates that are screwed onto your engine between the oil filter and engine block. The two ports allow hoses to be run to your cooler.
